Steffen De Vreese holds a Master’s degree in Veterinary Sciences from Ghent University (Belgium), where he specialised in the anatomy of cetacean sound production and sound reception. Driven by a long-standing interest in the relationship between morphology and acoustics, he joined the Laboratory of Applied Bioacoustics (LAB) in 2014, where he has since contributed to a wide range of research and applied projects, including acoustic analyses and the study of anthropogenic noise impacts on aquatic life.
He completed a PhD on the peripheral nervous system in odontocete heads, focusing on the morphology and pathology of acoustic pathways, through a joint programme with the Department of Comparative Biomedicine and Food Science at the University of Padova (Italy). Alongside his scientific work, he has extensive experience in EU project management, scientific communication, and visual design, with a strong interest in translating research methodologies into tools and narratives with broader societal impact.
Steffen actively develops interdisciplinary collaborations at the intersection of science and art, having worked with artists and collectives on museum exhibitions and performances. He continues to pursue this complementary path, always open to new collaborations and creative explorations.
